Sag Harbor Village's original French House has just undergone a comprehensive and historically sensitive restoration and expansion by Dragana Vlatkovic, a local designer and engineer known for her meticulous attention to every detail. Built circa 1830 and owned by Hannibal French, the noted whaling and shipping investor, this home is characteristic of affluent Sag Harbor captains' homes of the time, featuring spacious entertaining rooms with high ceilings, large windows and elegant French doors facing the street. These and many other elements have been reused to the furthest extent possible in the painstaking restoration -- the original wide-plank pine floors were removed, re-milled and reset; ornamental scrolls of the staircase restored in place; the windows custom-made to the specifications of the original and energy efficient for modern comfort. Original foundations made of boulders reclaimed from whaling ships' ballast are revealed in the lower level.
